RICHMOND — A 14-year-old girl died and her 11-year-old sister was critically injured after a suspected stolen car crashed into two trees and a telephone pole, police said.
Two 15-year-old boys also were in the vehicle and fled the scene, according to police. Officers found one of them in a hospital seeking treatment for injuries and the other a Richmond residence, police said.
Police have not determined who was driving the severely damaged Infinity G35. They said the Infinity had been reported stolen out of San Pablo on Saturday.
It all happened Monday before sunrise. In a statement, Richmond police said they received an automated collision alert about 5:15 a.m. from two separate iPhones that there had been a severe crash in the 600 block of Canal Boulevard.
When officers arrived, they found the 14-year-old ejected from the severely damaged Infinity G35. She died there. Authorities did not identify her immediately Wednesday morning.
The 11-year-old had critical injuries and was taken by ambulance to a trauma center, police said. She remained there in critical condition Tuesday; police did not have any immediate update on her condition Wednesday.
According to police, their initial investigation showed that the Infinity was speeding north on Canal Boulevard when it went off the roadway and hit two trees and a light pole on the curb to the east side of the road.
Police said the occupants of the vehicle who have spoken have provided conflicting statements about who was driving. They said they would use DNA evidence to help determine who was behind the wheel.
