Pleasanton cocaine dealer gets 7 years in federal prison

OAKLAND — A man was sentenced to seven years in federal prison for having nearly three pounds of cocaine and identity theft materials in his Pleasanton apartment, court records show.

Chanta Hopkins, 41, was sentenced last month by U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria, after pleading guilty to identity theft and a cocaine distribution charge. Hopkins has previously been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for drug and identity theft convictions, but got a compassionate release from prison in 2020, records show.

But in October 2023, federal authorities searched his Pleasanton home and found 2.8 kilograms of cocaine, a handgun, roughly a half-pound of methamphetamine, and identity theft materials that included “credit card scanners, a credit card embosser, a credit card printer, numerous payment cards, driver’s licenses bearing Hopkins’ photograph but other names, and driver’s licenses and Social Security cards belonging to other individuals,” prosecutors said in court records.

Hopkins’ lawyer said in court filings that after this arrest he “has committed to rehabilitation unlike ever before,” and plans to continue to take advantage of rehabilitation programs in prison. Hopkins could have challenged the search of his home due to a likely Fourth Amendment violation, but chose instead to take responsibility for his crimes and move forward with his life, the lawyer added.
