FREMONT — A person who got out of their car and began throwing objects at vehicles on State Route 84 early Sunday was killed when he was hit by a car, the California Highway Patrol said.
The deceased man’s name was not immediately released pending notification of his family.
The driver of the car that hit the man did not realize what had happened until he drove home and reviewed his dashboard camera footage, authorities said. Once the driver watched the footage, they contacted the CHP.
The fatal collision happened about 5:41 a.m. Sunday on westbound State Route 84 east of Paseo Padre Parkway.
According to the CHP, the man killed had stopped his Tesla in the lane closest to the center divider and walked to the center divider area before walking back into the number three lane. According to a passing motorist, he was throwing objects at vehicles before he was struck and killed by a Dodge Challenger, the CHP said.
The Challenger kept going but debris from the vehicle was recovered at the scene, CHP Officer Kylie Musselman said. Some of the debris had part numbers and the CHP was able to trace them to the owner.
