Ritzy Florida politician detained for suspected DUI in a beach town

Florida’s Naples- On August 28, Mayor Teresa Heitmann was taken into custody by police for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

After receiving a call from a man and his wife claiming that they were being followed by an unidentified woman in a silver car from 12th Avenue South and 3rd Street South, a busy stretch of eateries and retail establishments in downtown Naples, police first responded to a home in the 500 block of 16th Avenue South.

The unidentified woman “stopped her vehicle on the grass in front of their home,” according to a press statement from the police, when the couple got to their house.

Mayor is drunk

The woman parked in their front yard following a “brief exchange” with the callers, at which point the couple decided to phone the police. A man and his wife called the police, reporting that they were being followed by an unidentified woman in a silver car from 12th Avenue South and 3rd Street South to their home in the 500 block of 16th Avenue South.

The caller can be heard screaming, “I think the mayor is drunk and she just, she just literally—oh, she just drove over our mailbox,” during a 911 call.

Mayor Heitmann was the woman who was leaning on her car when the police arrived. NBC 2 was able to get police-worn body camera footage that showed Heitmann seeming to disassociate herself from her title when speaking with cops.

The officer hears asking Heitmann, “Mrs. Mayor, will you come on over for me right here?” in the video. “Don’t refer to me as mayor. She answers, “I’m Teresa Heitmann right now; I’m not the mayor.

Cause for arrest

Heitmann consented to take a field sobriety test when asked by the officers, who think she may have been drunk. After the test was finished, responding police “found probable cause to arrest Mrs. Heitmann for driving while under the influence of an intoxicating substance,” according to media reports.

The mayor was taken by authorities to Naples Jail Center, where she consented to take a breathalyzer test to find out how much alcohol was in her blood. After using a breathalyzer, the police found that her blood alcohol content (BAC) was between 0.155 and 0.169, although Florida’s legal limit is 0.08.

The event involving the mayor last week grieved the city staff, according to a statement provided by Naples City Manager Jay Boodheshwar to Fox News Digital. The people of Naples can feel secure knowing that our city staff is devoted to providing for the needs of its citizens.

I have complete faith that the workers for the City will not allow this tragedy to interfere with providing services to our community.”
