On September 2, 2024, a tragic accident occurred in the Oak Bend neighborhood of Tavares when a 2-year-old boy riding his tricycle was struck by a truck. The driver of the truck, 19-year-old Joshua Montero was reportedly intoxicated at the time. Witnesses observed Montero’s truck speeding and driving recklessly before the collision. The truck’s front tires ran over the boy dragging him and his tricycle a short distance before coming to a stop, according to the report of True Crime News.
Police arrived at the scene around 7:15 p.m. and found the boy being attended to by neighbors before he was rushed to a local hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. Authorities noticed that Montero showed signs of intoxication including red eyes and the odor of alcohol. Subsequent tests revealed that his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit for his age indicating he was severely impaired.
