A report reveals that thousands of Hampton Roads seniors are missing out on SNAP benefits due to embarrassment or confusion, despite easier application options available through the Elderly Simplified Application Project.
Thousands of Hampton Roads Seniors Missing Out on SNAP Benefits Due to Application Barriers
According to Wavy, a new report shows that many seniors in Hampton Roads are missing out on food benefits they could get. The National Council on Aging and the Urban Institute found that over 100,000 Virginians aged 65 and older are eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits but are not using them. In Hampton Roads, more than 15,500 seniors are missing these benefits.
Some seniors might not apply for benefits because they feel embarrassed, think they don’t qualify, or find the application process too hard. Larhonda Ross from the Norfolk Department of Human Services said that it’s important for seniors to get this help, and they should not be afraid or too proud to ask for it.
