$6,000 Child Tax Credit: Is Increased Financial Support the Answer to Poverty?

(photo: Brookings Institution)

Critics argue that instead of increasing financial support through the Child Tax Credit and policymakers should focus on helping low-income families earn more money and become financially independent by implementing policies that support skill-building reduce penalties for marriage and encourage upward mobility.

Reforming the Child Tax Credit

According to the report of The New York Sun, in recent debates about economic policy Vice President Kamala Harris’s plan to update the Child Tax Credit has received a lot of attention. Her idea is to raise the credit to $6,000 for newborns and $3,600 for older children. This is in response to concerns that low-income families only get a small benefit from the current $2,000 per child credit. Critics including Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance argue that this increase might make things worse because low-income families already get a lot of government help. Vance suggests a $5,000 credit for all children to fix what he sees as an overly restrictive system.

Current government help like the Earned Income Tax Credit and food stamps significantly boosts the income of low-income families. For example, a family making $20,000 a year can get over $75,000 in total help when including health insurance, housing aid, and other supports. This amount of aid is much higher compared to what middle-class families get even though they earn more. Middle-class families mostly benefit from tax credits that lower their federal taxes but they get less help from other government programs.

From Handouts to Economic Empowerment

Critics argue that just increasing financial support might not be the best solution. Instead, they believe we should focus on helping low-income families earn more money and become less reliant on government help. Policies that support skill-building reduce penalties for marriage, and encourage moving up the income ladder might be better ways to fight poverty than just giving out more money. By improving job skills removing barriers to higher wages and supporting stable families and we can help low-income families achieve financial independence and reduce their need for government support.
