Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary Offers Prizes and “Lunch with the Mayor” to Encourage School Attendance
According to West Virginia Watch, Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School in Charleston, West Virginia, has started a new program to improve student attendance. Called “Steal the Show, Eight or Below,” the program rewards students who miss no more than eight days of school this year. Prizes include special lunches, limo rides, movies, and $100 for the top eight students with the best attendance. This effort is part of a larger plan to address chronic absenteeism, which affects many students in West Virginia.
Principal Destiny Spencer stressed the importance of coming to school regularly, noting that it helps students succeed and prepare for their future. The program was kicked off with an outdoor pep rally, and Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin also offered a monthly “lunch with the mayor” for students who have good attendance.
