3 Million Georgians Affected: Senator Jon Ossoff Launches IRS Inquiry to Waive Penalties for Taxpayers Hit by USPS Delays!

Sen. Jon Ossoff Urges IRS to Waive Penalties for Tax Filings Delayed by USPS Issues

Inquiry Seeks Faster Refund Processing and Account Adjustments for Affected Georgia Taxpayers

According to SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV)U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff has started an inquiry with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) after hearing from Georgia residents who are facing penalties for late or missing tax filings and payments. These issues have arisen because of delays with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). Residents have reported that their tax documents which were sent through the mail have been delayed or lost due to problems with the USPS Palmetto Regional Processing and Distribution Center which began operating earlier this year.

In his inquiry Sen. Ossoff is asking the IRS to waive any penalties and interest fees that people have incurred due to these USPS delays. He also wants the IRS to quickly update taxpayer accounts to stop any further fees from accumulating and to speed up the processing of tax refunds for those affected by the mail delays. The senator is concerned that many taxpayers are struggling financially because of these issues and the slow processing of their refunds.
