According to The US News, in Atlanta, a program called In Her Hands is giving women a chance to get up to $1,000 every month, with no conditions attached. This In Her Hands program is the largest in the U.S. that focuses on helping Black women. To qualify, women must be at least 18 years old, live in certain neighborhoods on Atlanta’s Westside, and earn no more than twice the Federal PovertyLevel, which is about $30,000 a year for one person or $51,000 for a family of three.
In 2024, the program grew to help about 270 women from neighborhoods like Bankhead, English Avenue, Vine City, and Washington Park. The women were chosen through a lottery system to keep it fair. They will get $36,000 over three years, either as regular $1,000 monthly payments or as monthly payments combined with a one-time larger payment. The money can be used for anything, such as basic needs, medical care, or future investments.
