Pilot Program Success Leads to Permanent Free Filing Option, Saving Taxpayers Millions

According to The Charlotte Observer, starting in 2025 North Carolina taxpayers will have a new way to file their taxes for free using the IRS Direct File program. Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Revenue Secretary Ronald Penny announced that eligible residents can use this tool to file both their state and federal tax returns directly through the IRS. This new option is designed to make the tax filing process easier cut out unnecessary fees and help more people get the credits and refunds they deserve. By allowing taxpayers to deal directly with the IRS the Direct File program aims to save money and simplify the process.

The Direct File pilot program which was tested in 2024 showed good results with 140,000 participants. It saved these users $5.6 million in tax preparation fees and helped them claim over $90 million in refunds. The program allowed users to complete their tax filings in about 30 minutes on average proving to be both efficient and user-friendly. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel pointed out the strong desire for a free filing option leading to the decision to make the program a permanent choice for federal tax returns.
