U-Haul Settles $5.085 Million Data Breach Lawsuit Affecting California Customers
California Residents Can Claim Up to $100 from U-Haul Settlement by October 15, 2024
According to The U.S. Sun, U-Haul has reached a $5.085 million settlement in a class action lawsuit related to data breaches that impacted California customers. This settlement addresses claims that U-Haul did not sufficiently protect personal information during two data breaches one in September 2022 and another in December 2023. During these breaches unauthorized parties might have accessed sensitive information such as customer names and driver’s license numbers. While U-Haul maintains it did not do anything wrong the company agreed to the settlement to avoid the further costs and complications of a prolonged legal battle.
To be eligible for a payout from this settlement individuals must reside in California where the breaches occurred. Those who qualify can expect to receive up to $100 although the final amount may vary depending on how many claims are filed. About 259,300 people are expected to be eligible for this settlement. Among them around 2,458 individuals were affected by both breaches and can submit two separate claims. To receive compensation affected individuals need to file their claims by October 15, 2024.

Rising Trend: Companies Face Large Settlements Over Data Breaches as Lawsuits Increase
This settlement is part of a growing trend where companies are paying large amounts of money because of cybersecurity problems. Data breaches are affecting many different types of businesses leading to more class action lawsuits. For instance a broadband company in Georgia and a big background check firm have both settled similar lawsuits for not protecting customer data. As data breaches become more common more people are suing companies to get compensation for their losses.
