Vice President Kamala Harris is proposing to increase the child tax credit to $6,000 per child, while Republican Senator JD Vance supports raising it to $5,000, reflecting ongoing debates about boosting support for families.
Kamala Harris Proposes Boosting Child Tax Credit to $6,000 to Support Families
According to Scripps News, Vice President Kamala Harris is pushing for a big increase in the child tax credit to $6,000 per child. On August 16, Harris announced her plan to raise the credit to $3,600 per child, and up to $6,000 for families with newborns. Currently, families with incomes up to $200,000 receive a $2,000 credit, with $1,600 of it refundable.
Earlier this year, the House tried to gradually increase the refundable part of the credit, but the Senate did not pass the measure. The expanded child tax credits during the COVID-19 pandemic greatly helped reduce child poverty, showing how more support can make a big difference. In 2021, the increased credit kept 5.3 million people out of poverty, though this dropped when the credit returned to its old levels in 2022.
