This money comes from old accounts at banks, insurance companies, and other places that couldn’t find the owners. These funds include savings accounts, uncashed checks, and insurance benefits, which are given to the state if they remain unclaimed.

To see if you have any of this unclaimed money, go to the New York State Comptroller’s website and enter your name. The search is free, and there are no charges to claim any money you find. The state handles about 42 million accounts and returns more than $1.5 million each day. Most claims are for small amounts, with many being under $100.
