SNAP Recipients in Virgin Islands Can Apply for Replacement Benefits Due to Power Outages and Disasters
Plaskett and VIDHS Collaborate to Provide Timely Support for Food Loss from Emergencies
(According to The Virgin Islands Consumption), delegate to Congress Stacey Plaskett and the Virgin Islands Department of Human Services (VIDHS) have introduced new measures to help Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients affected by recent rolling blackouts and other emergencies. Starting this Friday households in the Virgin Islands that have lost food due to power outages lasting four or more hours can apply for replacement benefits. This program also covers food loss from other disasters such as fires, floods, and broken refrigerators. The goal is to ensure that those who lost access to essential nutrition during these events get the support they need.
Plaskett stressed the importance of a quick response to these problems especially for vulnerable groups hit hardest by power outages. She praised the teamwork between her office and VIDHS in setting up this support program. It is critically important for our leaders to respond timely to ensure that those desperately in need of these replacement benefits receive them as quickly as possible Plaskett said. She also acknowledged Commissioner Averil George for her efforts in managing the program and helping SNAP recipients recover from food loss.

SNAP Program Ensures Quick Relief for Food Loss Due to Disasters and Power Outages
To receive replacement benefits SNAP recipients must report their food loss within ten days. They can pick up application forms at SNAP offices or download them online. For help recipients can contact the VIDHS Division of Family Assistance at specific numbers for St. Croix and St. Thomas/St. John. The program can replace up to one month’s worth of benefits and aims to provide support within 2 to 10 business days after the application is approved. This effort ensures that families do not go without necessary food due to unexpected events.
