Virginia and North Carolina Families to Receive Benefits via SNAP EBT or Mail

According to WAVY.com, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is launching a new food assistance program called “SUN Bucks” to help families in Virginia, North Carolina and across the country. The program provides $120 per child to buy groceries during the summer months. This support is meant to work alongside other benefits like SNAP and WIC giving extra help to families with school-aged children who might need it. The goal is to make sure these children have enough to eat when school meals are not available.

In Virginia, the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) will deliver the SUN Bucks benefits in two ways. Families may receive the funds on their existing SNAP EBT card or a new Virginia SUN Bucks card pre-loaded with the benefit amount. In North Carolina eligible families will get their SUN Bucks cards by mail. If you are already receiving SNAP, TANF, or income-eligible Medicaid or if your child gets free or reduced-priced meals at school, you do not need to apply separately; you are already included in the program.
