Cook County Taxpayers to Receive $22 Million in Refunds
Over 10,000 Property Owners to Get Automatic Refunds for Overpaid 2023 Property Taxes
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas has announced that more than $22 million will be refunded to over 10,000 property owners who paid too much in 2023 property taxes. This is because various tax breaks and like Homeowner and Senior Citizen exemptions, reduced what they owed on their Second Installment bill. Since they already paid the First Installment earlier this year and they will get automatic refunds, according to the report of WGN 9.
The refunds will be sent in two ways
5,813 property owners will have their money directly deposited into their bank accounts while 4,286 others will get checks in the mail by August 9. Most people will not need to fill out any forms as the refunds are part of an automatic program started in 2018. This program has already returned about $143.2 million to over 165,000 property owners without needing applications.
To find out if they are getting a refund property owners can visit the Cook County Treasurer’s website and use the “Your Property Tax Overview” tool. They will need to enter their address or Property Index Number (PIN). This process helps make sure that refunds are given to those who qualify as quickly as possible.
