According to the report of North Jersey, New Jersey will join the IRS Direct File tax program starting in the 2025 tax season, making it easier for residents to file their taxes. Governor Phil Murphy and U.S. Treasury Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo announced that this program will let New Jerseyans file both federal and state taxes online for free. It will help people claim the credits and refunds they are eligible for, making tax filing simpler and less stressful.
The Direct File program was tested in 12 states for the 2024 tax season and received positive feedback. It helped over 140,000 people get more than $90 million in refunds and saved about $5.6 million in filing costs. With New Jersey joining, more than 1 million residents will have access to this free option. The IRS plans to expand the program to cover more tax situations, especially those affecting working families.
