Rooted School: Key Partner in Advancing Educational Equity

According to Just The News, New Orleans is launching a $1 million guaranteed basic income pilot program for public high school students supported by federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. Over three years the initiative aims to assist 800 students, particularly those in underserved communities. This program discussed during a recent city committee meeting addresses financial challenges faced by students and their families. Initially it was envisioned as a $50-per-week stipend from 2022 to 2024 but has expanded to provide broader and sustained support. Despite potential logistical and budget adjustments officials expect valuable insights into how guaranteed income impacts student outcomes.

The program will predominantly benefit students from Rooted School a public high school affiliated with Southern University of New Orleans’ College of Education and Human Development. Known for its innovative educational approach since 2014, Rooted School is seen as an ideal partner for this initiative. Previous phases of the guaranteed income program in New Orleans and Indianapolis have shown promise in supporting youth through financial stability during critical educational years. By taking proactive steps New Orleans aims to enhance educational opportunities and economic resilience anticipating lessons that could shape future policies for youth empowerment and community development citywide.
