Affordable Housing Crisis in Southwest and Southern Virginia – Urgent Need for 13,000 New Homes and Rental Assistance to Address Housing Affordability

According to the report of Cardinal News, the affordable housing crisis in Southwest and Southern Virginia is affecting many residents, with nearly one million Virginians struggling to afford basics because housing costs are too high compared to their income. This struggle hits hard on essential workers like nurses, firefighters, and teaching assistants, who are crucial to our communities’ well-being. Having affordable housing is vital for economic growth and ensuring everyone has a safe place to live.

Affordable housing means residents spend no more than 30% of their income on housing, but the problem has deep roots going back decades and has worsened due to events like the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. The lack of affordable housing impacts all groups, with Black households facing a heavier burden than white and Asian households. The need for 13,000 new affordable homes in Southwest and Southside/New River Valley shows the urgent call to address the housing crisis by creating more homes and offering rental help for families with school-age kids.
