$3 Million in Unclaimed Refunds: Rhode Island Taxpayers Get Extension and Assistance Due to Storm Damage

Due to storm-related extensions, Rhode Island taxpayers have until July 15 to file state and federal taxes, with free assistance available for those with lower incomes.

Rhode Island Taxpayers Granted Extended Tax Deadlines to July 15 Due to Storms

According to The Providence Journal, there’s some relief for Rhode Island taxpayers who haven’t done their taxes yet: the deadlines are later this year. Due to storms earlier in the year, residents of Providence, Washington, and Kent counties have until July 15 to file their federal taxes. The state tax deadline is also extended to July 15 for everyone in Rhode Island. While you can ask for an extension until October 15, remember that if you owe money, it must be paid by July 15.

The extended tax deadlines are a result of storms declared disasters in September, December, and January. For those needing assistance with taxes, the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is available. It provides free tax help to Rhode Island residents earning less than $64,000 annually. Free tax preparation sites are located in Central Falls, Providence, and Woonsocket, each offering specific contact information and appointment scheduling.

The IRS also has a “Free File” program for anyone making $78,000 or less, offering free tax preparation software. Rhode Island taxpayers can check the status of their refunds on special websites provided by the IRS and the state. It’s important to file on time to avoid penalties if you owe money, but there’s no penalty if you’re getting a refund. The IRS says Rhode Islanders are owed $3 million in unclaimed refunds from 2020.
