Thomas Kinworthy, 47, has been sentenced to life without parole for killing Officer Tamarris Bohannon and injuring Officers Arlando Bailey and Mark Smith during a 2020 standoff in St. Louis.

Kinworthy Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Killing St. Louis Police Officer and Injuring Others

Thomas Kinworthy, 47, received a life sentence without parole for killing St. Louis Police Officer Tamarris Bohannon and injuring Officers Arlando Bailey and Mark Smith. The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office announced the sentence on June 27, closing a case that began when Kinworthy arrived in St. Louis in August 2020, fleeing bail conditions in Florida. He shot Smith barricaded himself and fatally shot Officer Bohannon during a police standoff, according to the report of True Crime Daily.

During the standoff, Officer Bailey was also wounded while trying to protect himself. Negotiations lasted 12 hours, ending with Kinworthy’s apprehension after SWAT teams used chemical irritants and forced entry. Throughout his trial, Kinworthy showed no remorse even confronting prosecutors verbally. His defense claimed he had a psychotic episode during the incident.

Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore emphasized that justice was finally achieved for Officers Bohannon and Bailey’s families after a lengthy legal process. Officer Bohannon, who served the St. Louis Metropolitan Police for over three and a half years, is mourned deeply by the community he served, leaving an irreplaceable void.

As legal proceedings conclude, St. Louis reflects on the tragic loss of Officer Bohannon and the impact of this violent incident on the city and its law enforcement community.
