Costa Mesa is seeing a rise in thefts of pickup truck tailgates prompting concern among residents and businesses. Jay Herrera of Costa Mesa Auto Body and Paint notes that owners often discover their tailgates missing unexpectedly, whether overnight or during brief absences. Thieves find these parts lucrative due to their easy removal potentially selling them for profit.

Thieves are not just taking tailgates but also valuable components from newer models like Chevy and Ford F-150s. Costa Mesa police have reported over 20 thefts mostly from Toyota Tacomas. Surveillance footage captured one theft in under a minute, highlighting the thieves efficiency.

Costa Mesa Takes Action Against Rising Tailgate Theft Threat

Owners like Kent Buechner are becoming more cautious especially those without secure parking options. Herrera advises installing locks on tailgate hinges as a practical deterrent against theft. Protecting tailgates can prevent costly repairs,which typically range from $2,500 to $4,500, including painting and installation.

The community is rallying to address the recent surge in tailgate thefts in Costa Mesa. Businesses and residents alike are advised to take precautions to safeguard their vehicles given the ease with which tailgates can be stolen. Cooperation between residents and law enforcement remains crucial in tackling this issue effectively, according to the report of ABC 7.
