California Budget Plan: A Mixed Bag for Immigrant Communities
Food and Support Services Impacted: What’s in Store for Undocumented Californians
According to LATimes, California‘s state budget plan is good news for some, but not for others. The plan keeps helping immigrant students, staff, and faculty at California universities get free legal help. It also keeps providing care services for elderly, blind, and disabled undocumented immigrants who get medical help from the state.
However, the plan delays giving food benefits to low-income undocumented seniors until 2027. This means over 100,000 people might struggle to find food until then. The plan also stops a program that helps unaccompanied immigrant children get legal and social support.
Immigrant Advocates Speak Out: “Immigration Status Should Not Decide Whether Someone Can Eat or Not
Immigrant advocates are unhappy about these decisions. They say it will make life harder for people who are already struggling. One advocate said, “Immigration status should not decide whether someone can eat or not.” Despite this setback, advocates hope that future budget talks will prioritize helping immigrant communities and provide more support for those in need.
