$2.3 Million Lost: Kentuckians Warned of Rising Food Stamp Fraud – Victims Urged to Report Theft

Kentucky’s health and family services warn people about more food stamp fraud, telling victims to report quickly to get their money back and teaching them how to stop thieves from stealing benefits electronically.

Kentuckians Alerted About Food Stamp Fraud

According to the Courier-Journal, scammers in Kentucky have developed new methods to steal food stamps from families in need, resulting in losses nearing $2.3 million since August, as reported by the state’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Victims of this fraud can request reimbursement, but the process in Kentucky is often lengthy, taking weeks for the stolen funds to be restored. To report the theft, victims must contact the Department for Community-Based Services at 1-855-306-8959 within 30 days of the incident. They are also required to complete a form to receive a replacement card, which the department will review within 10 days before sending out the new card, adding an additional five days for delivery.

Kentucky residents impacted by food stamp fraud should report incidents at state offices and seek assistance from nearby food banks. They can find resources online at kynect.ky.gov/resources or contact United Way at 211. To prevent electronic fraud, the Kentucky’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services recommends regular PIN changes, utilizing the ebtEDGE app, and inspecting card swipe machines for tampering.
