Louisiana is giving $120 to 300,000 kids aged 5 to 18 through SNAP EBT cards in the SUN Bucks program to help families feed children during summer break and reduce food worries.
Louisiana Introduces SUN Bucks Program to Help Families
According to KLFY, the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) has introduced the SUN Bucks program to support families in feeding their children over the summer vacation. Funded by the USDA, this initiative will give a one-time $120 payment per eligible child, deposited onto their SNAP EBT card by Friday, June 21. The initial phase targets 300,000 children aged 5 to 18 who received SNAP benefits during the previous school year, aiming to ensure they have sufficient food during school closures.

Expansion of Benefits in Phase 2
Phase 2 of the SUN Bucks program will expand benefits to more children who are automatically eligible. This includes kids who receive Medicaid, FITAP, or KCSP benefits, as well as those who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. In late July, DCFS will send out new EBT cards loaded with SUN Bucks to these families. This will allow them to buy food that qualifies for SNAP at stores that accept EBT cards. DCFS reminds families that these benefits must be used within 122 days from when they are added to the card to avoid losing them.
Future Opportunities in Phase 3
After Phases 1 and 2, Phase 3 will open an application period for children who were not automatically included in the first two phases. DCFS aims to make sure that all eligible children in Louisiana have access to the SUN Bucks program, which helps families during the summer to combat hunger among children effectively. The program reflects a commitment to supporting families across the state during these challenging times.
