Texas is struggling to process Medicaid and SNAP applications efficiently.
Texas Struggles with Medicaid and SNAP Processing, Endangering Benefits
Texas officials revealed on Monday that the state is failing to meet federal requirements for processing Medicaid health insurance and SNAP food benefits applications efficiently, according to the report of Axios.
Texas has removed over a million people from Medicaid in the past year, mostly due to procedural issues rather than actual ineligibility. This could lead to delays in re-enrollment and accessing necessary healthcare.
Delays in processing SNAP benefits make it difficult for food-insecure families to maintain regular, healthy meals. Failure to improve the SNAP system could result in Texas losing significant federal funding.
During the pandemic, Texas paused Medicaid eligibility checks but resumed them in April 2023. As of now, about 2.1 million Texans have lost Medicaid coverage, highlighting the severity of the problem.
