Hampton City Council Votes to Double Mayor and Council Salaries by 2025
According to the article in The Virginian Pilot, the Hampton City Council recently voted unanimously to increase the salaries for the mayor and council members, starting from July 1, 2025. Under the new state law based on city population, the mayor’s salary will rise to $47,000, and council members will earn $43,000, up from the current $25,000 and $23,000, respectively.
This decision follows a new law passed by the General Assembly, allowing cities to nearly double the maximum earnings for local elected officials if approved by city councils. The ordinance also includes plans for gradual salary increases in future years, aligned with raises given to full-time city employees.
