IRS Expands Direct File Program Nationwide – Drawing Mixed Reactions from Tax Software Companies
According to the published article in Huff Post, the IRS wants to make it easier for people to file their taxes directly to them using a program called Direct File. They’re planning to expand this program to all 50 states and the District of Columbia after a successful trial run with 12 states. People who used it liked it, saving $5.6 million in fees and getting $90 million in refunds.
Some groups are happy about this expansion, saying it helps people file taxes more easily. But others, like Intuit, the company that makes TurboTax, don’t like it. They say it’s not needed because there’s already a program called Free File that lets people file their taxes for free.
