Illinois House Democrats Approve Record $53 Billion Budget Amid GOP Criticism Over Tax Increases and Spending Practices.
According to the published article in the Washington Examiner, in a late-night session, Illinois House Democrats approved a record $53 billion spending plan, the largest in the state’s history. The budget has increased taxes by $750 million and boosted spending by 32% since Governor J.B. Pritzker took office in 2019. It also spends $400 million more than what Pritzker proposed earlier this year and includes $971 million for non-citizen migrant health care and services.
Republicans, like State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer, criticized the budget for spending too much and using tricks to make it look balanced. They worry about the state’s financial future, especially since federal COVID-19 relief money is gone. Davidsmeyer also pointed out that nearly $1 billion is being moved from other state funds to General Revenue Funds, and said the budget unfairly burdens taxpayers and funds special projects for Democrats.
