Newsom and Teachers Union Reach $5.5 Billion School Funding Deal

According to the published article in Politico, Governor Gavin Newsom has reached an agreement with California’s largest teachers union to increase future funding for schools and resolve disagreements over the state budget. This deal comes after the California Teachers Association criticized Newsom’s plan to cut nearly $12 billion from school funding over two years. The new agreement will add $5.5 billion in future funding for schools by adjusting the Proposition 98 formula while temporarily suspending the guarantee to help with the budget deficit.

The teachers union, which has a strong influence in Sacramento worked closely with Newsom to shape this new plan. Despite the agreement, the teachers union will continue to run ads and lobby the Legislature to support the deal. This agreement is a big step toward finalizing a $100 billion education budget but the Legislature still needs to approve it and more discussions are needed to get everyone on board.
