2.5 Million Illinoisans Impacted: New Bills Aim to Regulate Health Insurance Plans and Protect Consumers

Two new rules in Illinois want to change how health insurance works. They want to stop plans that might trick people and give the government more say in how insurance costs and coverage are decided. But some worry this could make insurance more expensive and give fewer choices.

Illinois Passes Laws to Reform Health Insurance

According to a published article in the Washington Examiner, two new laws in Illinois could change how health insurance works in the state. Democrats and Governor J.B. Pritzker want to stop what they call “tricky” short-term insurance plans. These plans don’t last long and might not cover everything people need.

One law, called House Bill 2499, passed in both the House and Senate. It’s called the Health Care Protection Act. Another law, House Bill 5395, also got approval. It gives more power to the Illinois Department of Insurance to control insurance rates and what treatments are covered.
