Former Student Murad Dervish Found Guilty of Premeditated Murder of University of Arizona Professor
Dervish was expelled from the university in January 2022 due to conflicts with professors after receiving a bad grade. His lawyer argued that Dervish was having a psychotic episode during the shooting and didn’t plan the crime, but the prosecutor showed evidence that Dervish had planned it. This included buying a 9 mm handgun a month before the shooting. Witnesses said Dervish wore a mask and cap as a disguise when he shot Arizona professor Meixner 11 times near his office. After the shooting, Dervish fled but was caught three hours later, over 120 miles away from Tucson. Police found a loaded handgun in his car that matched the bullets used in the shooting. Before the attack, the university had warned staff about Dervish and told them to call 911 if they saw him on campus. This case shows the serious effects of mental health issues and the importance of campus safety.
