$9.5 Million in California’s Middle-Class Tax Refund Payments Remain Unactivated: What You Need to Know!

The Middle-Class Tax Refund (MCTR) in California gave money to help with high living costs, but many people haven’t used their refund yet, even though they got debit cards. Now, the tax board wants them to activate the cards to get their needed money.

California Urges Residents to Activate Unused Debit Cards for Middle-Class Tax Refund Benefits

According to the published article by Kiplinger, the Middle-Class Tax Refund (MCTR) program in California was meant to help people cope with the high cost of living. Over two years, millions of Californians got money to help with things like rent, healthcare, and everyday expenses. Even though over 9.5 million debit cards were given out with refund money, many people haven’t used their benefits yet. The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) is telling people to activate their debit cards to get the money they need.

The payments, which could be between $200 to $1,050, were sent to people based on how much money they made, their filing status, and if they had dependents. These payments went out between October 2022 and January 2023. But even though millions of debit cards were sent out, many are still sitting unused. An audit report from March 7 said that over a million cards, totaling about $611 million, hadn’t been activated by January 2024. To fix this, the FTB is reminding people to activate their cards and offering help for those who haven’t got theirs yet.
