Hartford Stands Out as One of the Most Dangerous Cities

In Connecticut, Hartford stood out as one of the most dangerous cities but New Haven had a higher rate of property crime. Despite this, neither city ranked among the top in the country for violent or property crimes. Birmingham, Alabama, topped the list for having the highest cost of crime, with a high rate of violent and property crimes per capita.

Tops the List for Having the Highest Cost of Crime

While Birmingham had the highest cost of crime it wasn’t the city with the highest violent crime rate. Memphis, Detroit, and Little Rock saw more violent crimes per person. Similarly, Memphis, along with Tacoma and St. Louis, had the highest rates of property crime among large cities.

In smaller towns and cities, crime-fighting resources can be scarcer, making the cost of crime even more burdensome. However, in Connecticut, even the most dangerous smaller city, Torrington, was ranked as the 51st safest in the country, with a relatively low per-capita cost of crime.

Leads the Ranking for Small Towns and Cities

Across the United States, Monroe, Louisiana, topped the list for small towns and cities with the highest cost of crime. Conversely, cities like Thousand Oaks, California, and Fishers, Indiana, were noted for having the lowest cost of crime per capita, making them potentially safer places to live.
