Veterans are outraged after a report revealed the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) improperly gave $10.8 million in bonuses to executives leading to calls for accountability and the resignation of top officials.
Veterans Demand Accountability After $10.8M in Department of Veterans Affairs Bonuses Amid System Problems
According to a published article in the Washington Examiner, veterans are angry after a report showed the Department of Veterans Affairs gave $10.8 million in bonuses to top executives, even though the Department of Veterans Affairs has many problems. The bonuses were canceled but not all the money has been returned. Shelby Anderson a disabled Marine veteran, said it’s insulting to see this money given as bonuses while many veterans still need help.
Russ Duerstine from Concerned Veterans for America and Kate Monroe from VetComm are demanding action. Justine wants two top Department of Veterans Affairs officials, Shereef Elnahal and Joshua Jacobs to resign because they did not respect public trust. Monroe said the money was supposed to help injured veterans, not make executives richer.

Lawmakers Demand Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability for Wrongly Given $10.8M Bonuses to Executives
Furthermore, Rep. Abigail Spanberger and other lawmakers are pushing for the Department of Veterans Affairs to be accountable. They are upset that the bonuses meant to attract skilled staff were wrongly given to 182 executives. The report blamed poor leadership for the mistake. Some executives are unhappy about having to pay back the money but the focus is now on fixing the Department of Veterans Affairs and making sure it helps veterans properly.
