This list doesn’t judge how well the police work; it just shows where crimes happen most often, helping people make informed decisions about where to live.

Most Dangerous Places in Indiana

Gary

Not far from Chicago, Gary has lots of crime, ranking second in the state for how much crime happens per person. It’s a small city with about 78,819 people, but it has a lot of property crimes and violent crimes, including 54 murders per person, making it the most dangerous place in Indiana.

Clarksville

Clarksville, a small town in Clark County, had the most crimes per person in 2013. Even though it’s small, people there had a significant chance of being victims of crime. It had the most property crimes, the ninth most violent crimes, and the third most murders per person in the state.

Indianapolis

Indianapolis, a big city with over 850,000 people, had a lot of violent crimes in 2013, with over 10,000 incidents, including 129 murders. Even with so many people, it still had the most violent crimes and the fifth most murders per person in Indiana. Along with many property crimes, Indianapolis is one of the top places for crime in the state.

East Chicago

East Chicago had a good amount of violent crimes for its size, with almost 200 incidents in a population of about 29,000. It also had a high number of murders per person, along with other crimes. Overall, it ranked ninth in total crimes per person in Indiana.

Washington

Washington, a small city with just over 11,800 people, had a fair share of crimes, including property and violent crimes. Despite its size, it ranked high for crimes per person in the state, showing that even small towns can have big crime problems.

South Bend

South Bend, located in St. Joseph County, had lots of crime across the board, especially violent crimes like assaults, robberies, rapes, and murders. Despite its size, it ranked high for violent crimes and murders per person, making it a risky place to live.
