SNAP Card Theft Crisis in Ohio: Families Struggle as Fraudsters Target Vulnerable Recipients

Ohio’s SNAP Card Theft Epidemic: Urgent Action Needed to Protect Vulnerable Families

In Ohio, many families rely on SNAP, a government program that helps them buy food but there’s a big problem and some bad people are stealing money from SNAP cards. Alisha Love, a mom who uses SNAP got her money stolen more than once. She thinks the government should do more to protect people like her, according to the report of Public News Service.

Alisha is upset because she needs that money to buy food for her kids. She’s working with Legal Aid to try to get her money back but it’s hard for her. She’s had to use her own money to buy food and it’s causing her a lot of stress.

The government says if you think someone stole your SNAP money you should change your PIN right away and call them to get a new card but for people like Phaleys Lopez it’s not just about the money. She couldn’t buy formula for her baby because someone stole from her SNAP card. She’s had to ask friends or family to help her buy it.

SNAP Card Theft Fallout: Food Banks Overwhelmed as Ohio Families Face Hunger Crisis

Hope Lane-Gavin works with a group that helps people get food. She says a lot of people who get their SNAP money stolen have to go to food banks for help. But food banks are already struggling to help everyone who needs it. She says it’s not fair that people who did everything right are still having trouble getting food.

The government made a temporary rule to help people who got their SNAP money stolen. But it’s going to end soon and Congress needs to do something to help these people. If they don’t thousands of families in Ohio might not have enough food to eat.
