The severity of the offense prompted the federal grand jury to indict Gering and Tavis in February 2023, categorizing the incident as an act of arson against property receiving federal financial assistance.

Despite the victim escaping severe harm Gering and Tavis received significant prison sentences for their actions. They will serve their terms in federal prison before being transferred to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
