Chicago Residents Challenge Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Housing Plans Amid Accessibility Concerns
Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Housing Plans Face Backlash as Accessibility Issues Spark Lawsuit in Chicago
In Chicago, people are unhappy with Mayor Brandon Johnson’s new plans. These plans don’t solve the big problems in a lawsuit against the city. The city spent lots of money on affordable housing over many years and many low-income people with disabilities are still left out.
The Mayor’s new plans promise to give more money for affordable housing and make it easier for projects to get approval but people say these plans don’t deal with the main issue making housing accessible for people with disabilities.
A group called Access Living took the city to court and they said the city’s housing doesn’t follow the rules for accessibility but the city admitted it didn’t check if housing was accessible before giving permits, according to the report of Chicago Sun Times. They also didn’t keep a list of accessible housing or punish owners who didn’t follow the rules.
The fight has been going on for six years and access Living tried to make a deal with the city but it didn’t work. Instead, the city spent a lot of money on lawyers. Now, the U.S. Department of Justice is supporting Access Living’s case and this could change things.
Mayor Brandon Johnson Urged to Address Accessibility Concerns as Access Living Pushes for Fair Housing Solutions
Access Living is worried and they think the city’s new plans won’t help people with disabilities. Without good rules, the city might waste money on housing that isn’t accessible. It’s not fair especially during Fair Housing Month.
Access Livingwants Mayor Johnson to do something and they want the city to settle the lawsuit and make sure future housing is accessible. Everyone should have a chance to live in good housing no matter their ability.
