Challenges in Small Cities Highlight Need for Improved Solutions
According to Southwest Journal, recent findings by RoadMunchies highlighted Mississippi’s riskiest spots for 2024 giving insight into the state’s crime situation. Although slightly higher than the national average for property crime and similar for violent crime, none of Mississippi’s cities made it to the top ten dangerous cities list in the U.S. Yet, the data showed even small cities faced big challenges with one having the most assaults and homicides in the state. While Mississippi avoided the national top ten there’s a need for better jobs, higher pay, and effective programs to curb rising crime in these riskiest spots.

Mississippi’s 5 Riskiest Spots
Cleveland
In Cleveland, Mississippi a small city with just over 10,000 people, crime is a big problem. It’s considered the first riskiest spot in the state. There were 678 property crimes and 97 violent crimes recorded here. But there’s a bright spot the city has a Grammy museum which is a nice break from all the crime. However, a recent scary robbery at a local store where the robbers hurt the clerk, shows there are still big safety concerns.
Natchez
Natchez, a city by the Mississippi River has a long history. But nowadays, it’s not doing so well economically, and crime has gone up. There are a lot of robberies, assaults, and even murders happening here. A recent sad event was when a local businessman was killed during a robbery at his home. People are worried and they’re asking for more police and for everyone to be more careful.
Corinth
Corinth, which used to be called Cross City, has a lot of history. But now, it’s struggling with crime. It has the highest burglary rate in the state. In a scary case, a woman was found dead in her home and her things were missing. They think it started as a burglary but turned into something worse. People are scared, and they want something done about the rising crime.
Vicksburg
Vicksburg, once an important trading city is now facing a lot of car thefts and assaults. Even though it has historical landmarks the high crime rate makes it less appealing. A shocking event was when a young woman was kidnapped and killed. They think it was random, which has made people even more worried. They’re asking for more police and for everyone to be careful.
Hattiesburg
Hattiesburg, a city with a history in industry has seen more crime lately. Even though it’s known for the University of Southern Mississippi there’s been a rise in burglaries, thefts, and car thefts. A really scary thing happened when a group of armed men robbed a bank in broad daylight. It was caught on camera, and now people are worried about safety and want more security in the city.
