Iowa Legislature Approves Major Mental Health and Disability Services Overhaul
Efforts to Combat Opioid Addiction Receive Unanimous Support in House Vote
According to the Des Moines Register, big changes are coming to Iowa‘s mental health and disability services thanks to a plan passed by Iowa lawmakers. Governor Kim Reynolds put forward this plan and now it just needs her signature. The Iowa lawmakers‘ idea is to fix what they call a “fractured” system by combining 32 local regions into seven bigger districts that handle mental health and substance abuse services. Disability services will also be under the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. Plus the state can pick public or nonprofit groups to run each of the seven districts.
This Iowa lawmakers‘ plan got a lot of support from both Democrats and Republicans with an 88-8 vote in the House. Iowa lawmakers see this as a chance to make things better for Americans in Iowa. They believe that by bringing together the different regions they can make services more consistent and easier to get for everyone. However, some worry that important services like ones where mental health experts work with police during crises might be disrupted during the changes. Still, Governor Reynolds is hopeful that these changes will help improve the mental health system across the state.
