Chicago City Council Approves $70 Million for Migrant Care Amidst Public Outcry

Mayor Brandon Johnson Secures Additional $70 Million for Migrant Care in Chicago, Totaling $220 Million

An extra $70 million for migrant care got approved by the Chicago City Council despite lots of people being really mad about it. Mayor Brandon Johnson asked for the money to help deal with more migrants coming into the city, according to the published article of Fox News. They also got $48 million from the state and federal governments. The total money for migrant care is now $220 million.

The mayor said they need the money in case even more migrants come especially because of something the Texas governor did. They want to use the money for things like food, shelter, medical care, and helping migrants settle in the city. Since August 2022 a lot of migrants, about 40,000, have arrived in Chicago. The mayor wants more help and money from the federal government.

Tension in Chicago as Residents Demand Focus on Local Needs Over Migrant Care Spending

Americans in Chicago didn’t like the decision. They think the city should spend money on them instead of migrants. At a meeting angry residents said the government should use taxpayer money for local needs. Some Americans even threatened to vote out council members who supported giving money to migrants.

The decision caused big tension in the community. Americans are upset because they feel like their needs aren’t being listened to. Some residents are trying to get Mayor Brandon Johnson removed from office. They’re collecting signatures for a vote to change the law so they can recall him. This shows that Americans in Chicago want things to change.
