Montana’s Most Dangerous Cities in 2024 – Calls for Enhanced Community Safety Initiatives
A recent study by Southwest Journal revealed the five most dangerous cities in Montana for 2024. Despite Montana not having the highest crime rates nationally there’s still room for improvement. While big cities like Billings and Missoula are part of the list the problem is spread across the state. This highlights the need for efforts to make communities safer in Montana.

Montana’s 5 Most Dangerous Cities
Billings
Billings is the biggest city in Montana by the Yellowstone River has pretty views and places like the Yellowstone Art Museum. But it’s also Montana’s most dangerous city. With 110,157 people it deals with a lot of property crimes like burglaries and robberies. Last year, there were 14 homicides there showing the need for better safety measures.
Ronan
Ronan is a small town with 2,141 folks in the Flathead Indian Reservation but isn’t safe either. Despite its size, it’s the second most dangerous place in Montana. There were 66 property crimes and 20 violent crimes reported there in just one year which is a lot for its size. That’s why local authorities need to do something about it.
Helena
Helena is known as Montana’s political capital but it’s also known for something bad and it has the highest rate of rape in the state. With 33,629 people, Helena saw 50 rapes last year along with 216 violent crimes and 1,227 property crimes. This shows there’s a big problem that needs fixing in the city.
Polson
Polson is a small town in the Flathead Indian Reservation, isn’t safe despite its charm. With 5,115 people, it’s the fourth most dangerous place in Montana. There were 164 property crimes and 36 violent crimes reported there in just one year. That’s a lot for such a small town and something needs to be done about it.
Havre
Havre is located by the Milk River in north-central Montana and dealing with more crime too. Despite its history as a railroad town it’s facing higher rates of property and violent crime. With 9,820 people, it reported 57 assaults last year. This shows that even in rural areas there’s a need for better safety measures.
