Push for Guaranteed Income Pilot Program Expansion
Community Engagement and Support
According to ABC 11, in Durham, North Carolina, Cedric Craig is pushing for more help for Americans who were once in trouble with the law. He believes that Durham’s Guaranteed Income Pilot program of giving money to these individuals has made life better for them. This Guaranteed Income Pilot program started in 2022 to help keep Americans out of jail by giving them extra money each month. And so far nobody who’s gotten this money has gone back to jail.
Cedric and a group called “Durham For All” want to get more money for the Guaranteed Income Pilot program. They’re asking for an extra one million dollars in the city’s budget. Another leader, Mayor Pro-Tem Mark-Anthony Middleton already set aside one million dollars for the Guaranteed Income Pilot program. He says it’s better to spend money helping Americans stay out of jail than paying for jails later. They’re meeting in Durham to talk more about the Guaranteed Income Pilot program and how it can help the community.
