The Aspen City Council has decided to up the food tax refund from $65 to $85 to help out residents with their expenses. This move aims to give back to the community, particularly by easing the burden of grocery taxes for locals. The idea of food tax refunds was introduced as a way to encourage support for a sales tax referendum, promising to reimburse citizens for the approximate sales tax they’d pay annually on groceries due to a 1% city sales tax.

Deadline Approaching for Aspen Food Tax Refund Applications

Residents interested in getting this refund should act fast, as the deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on Monday, April 15. It’s crucial to complete the application before this deadline, as late applications won’t be accepted. Those eligible for the Food Sales Tax Refund must have lived within Aspen city limits for the entire 2023 year, been registered voters in Aspen from January 1 to December 31, 2023, and be able to prove residency within the city limits. Applications and more details can be found on the city’s website, and assistance with completing the application is available at the Finance window on the second floor of City Hall.
