Initiative Targets Native American and African American Communities Facing Financial Hardship

According to The U.S. SUN in California a new Sacramento program is starting to help families who are struggling with money. It’s called the Family First Sacramento Pilot Program and it’s run by Sacramento County. The goal is to help around 200 families who don’t have a lot of money especially those who are Native American or African American. They’ll get $725 each month for a year which adds up to $8,700. This is to help because these communities had the lowest incomes in 2023.

Community Leaders Stress Importance of Financial Aid for Struggling Families

Sacramento County is working with the United Way California Capital Region to make this happen. Families who live in certain areas and have kids under five can enter a lottery to get the money from Sacramento program. The Sacramento program starts giving out the money in July. Michelle Callejas who works for Sacramento County says it’s really important to help these families because they have it the hardest when it comes to money. Experts like Dr. Steve Wirtz think giving families more money can really help. It can make it easier for them to pay bills on time and keep their families together. It also means they might not need help from the government as much. By helping families with money problems this program is trying to make things better for everyone both now and in the future.
