Arizona‘s Governor Katie Hobbs Veto Halts Republican-Led Push for Stricter SNAP Work Requirements and Waiver Restrictions

According to Ballotpedia News, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs who is a Democrat said no to two bills on April 2, 2024. These bills were suggested by the Republican-led group in charge. They wanted to make new rules for Americans getting help from SNAP which used to be called food stamps. One bill HB 2502 would have made it a must for healthy adults under 60 getting SNAP to join a work program. The other bill HB 2503 would have made it harder for the state to give waivers for work rules.

She thinks it would also make things tougher for food banks. Governor Katie Hobbs  believes it’s important to be able to change plans to help Americans especially when times are tough. These bills didn’t fit with the national rules which already say that some healthy adults getting SNAP need to work. Governor Katie Hobbs‘ decision shows there are big differences in what people think about helping others. This choice means there will be more talking about how to help Americans in Arizona and this conversation isn’t just in Arizona—it’s happening all over the country.
