Manitoba Government Expands Fertility Treatment Tax Credit: Doubled Benefits for Struggling Families

Premier Wab Kinew Announces Significant Enhancements to Fertility Treatment Tax Credit

The Manitoba government has announced a significant expansion to its Fertility Treatment Tax Credit, aiming to alleviate the financial strain for families seeking fertility treatments. Premier Wab Kinew revealed that the tax credit, initially introduced in 2010, will now offer double the benefit, with individuals eligible to receive up to $16,000 per year back on expenses totaling $40,000. Notably, the eligibility criteria have broadened to encompass additional expenses such as surrogates’ and donors’ medical costs, alongside payments to fertility clinics and donor banks. Dr. Gordon McTavish, medical director at Heartland Fertility Clinic, expressed support for the enhanced tax credit, emphasizing its crucial role in easing financial barriers for prospective parents undergoing fertility treatments. McTavish highlighted the escalating costs of treatments, noting that the average expense for an IVF cycle has doubled since the inception of the tax credit in 2010, now standing at approximately $20,000. With one in six individuals facing infertility challenges, McTavish underscored the significance of this financial relief for those pursuing parenthood.
