The deadline to claim tax refunds from 2020 is May 17, 2024. This gives Americans three years to file their returns and get their money back. If you’re missing important forms like W-2s or 1099s you can ask your employer or financial institution for copies. The IRS also has online resources to help you get the documents you need.

Looking ahead, the deadline for the 2024 tax season is April 15, 2024. The IRS expects over 128.7 million individual tax returns to be filed by then. So far, more than 71.5 million filings have already been submitted. It’s important to not only file for 2020 but also make sure your taxes are up to date for 2021 and 2022 to avoid any issues with getting your tax refunds on time.
